Brisbane Lions Scholar Award Eligibility & Guidelines 2026/2027 academic year

As Lions, our motto is, “We Serve.” For the Brisbane Lions, one way we serve our community is by supporting the education of our local youth through annual scholar awards.

Our goal with these awards is as follows:

  1. Provide financial assistance to young people in our community as they pursue college diplomas or technical degrees that will help them launch fulfilling careers.
  2. Reinforce the value of community and show students that they have a strong network of people who are invested in their success.
  3. Instill confidence in our young people and prepare them for future application processes by having them gather professional or academic recommendations; write essays and interview with members of the Brisbane Lions Club.
  4. Plant the seeds of community service and initiate what we hope will be a life-long relationship with the Lions Club.

Scholar Eligibility: (NOTE: eligibility guidelines may differ from previous years)

To be eligible for the scholarship, you must be a(n):

  • Undergraduate scholar at a two-year or four-year university or trade school and enrolled full-time (min of 12 units or however full-time enrollment is defined at a particular school).
  • Those enrolled part-time or  part of the year instead of a full academic school year may still be eligible for a partial scholar award as determined by the Scholar Awards Committee.
  • As of the April 1, 2026 (scholar award application due date), the scholar or legal guardian must have lived full-time in Brisbane for a minimum of one year between 2025 and 2026.
  • Scholars are eligible to apply and receive up to four scholar awards over time.

Application Requirements: (NOTE: requirements differ from previous years)

We recommend that applicants review all elements of the application prior to starting to prepare for everything you will need prior to starting on the online form. Other than a few short answers, we will be asking you to upload files from your computer that you have prepared in advance.

NOTE: Scholars are required to upload all of the documents requested, as well as provide their contact information. Any applicant who does not provide the following materials by the deadline will be disqualified.

The attachments must be titled in the following format:

"Firstname-Lastname-DocumentTitle"

(For example: "Jane-Doe-Essays" or "Jane-Doe-Picture")

  • Letter of acceptance from university/trade school indicating full-time status.
  • Most recent high school/college transcript
  • One letter of recommendation that is dated no older than three months. The letter must be addressed to the Brisbane Lions Club from a professional/academic contact, such as a high school or college instructor, or work supervisor. [Note: This is a change from last year when two letters  were required].
  • Two personal essays: 300- 500 word responses to two writing prompts. Select Two Prompts From Below.

  1. Describe a time in your life that shaped who you are as a person.
  2. How do you plan to contribute to your community after graduation?
  3. Who is someone who inspires you, and why?
  4. Describe a time when you surprised yourself , and what you took away from that experience.
  5. How are you unique? (Discuss your background, identity, interests and talent.

Have everything ready to upload before you start your online application. A partial application cannot be saved or submitted.

The Scholar Interview is the final step to complete the award eligibility process.  Scholars will be provided enough interview time slots to accommodate all scholar applicants on a first come basis. Each scholar interview is 20 minutes long and conducted via Zoom with two members of the Scholar Awards Committee.

In addition:

  • Changes to the selected appointment or requests for make-up interviews are discouraged; last-minute requests for changes will not necessarily be honored.
  • Applicants for a scholar award are expected to be prepared and prompt. Preparation includes being prepared to talk about your academic and career aspirations, as well as your essay topics.
  • Although it is not our goal to use the interview process to eliminate scholars, we do reserve the right to eliminate a scholar from consideration for an award if she/she fails to appear for the interview, is unprepared for the interview or behaves unprofessionally during the interview. The decision not to award a student a scholarship based on poor interview performance will be made by the Scholar Awards Committee.
