Scholar Eligibility:

[NOTE: eligibility guidelines may differ from previous years]

To be eligible for the scholarship, you must be a(n):

  • Undergraduate scholar at a two-year or four-year university or trade school and enrolled full-time (min of 12 units or however full-time enrollment is defined at a particular school).  (Those enrolled part-time or part of the year instead of a full academic school year may still be eligible for a partial scholarship as determined by the Scholar Awards Committee.)
  • As of the April 15, 2025 (scholar award application due date), the scholar or legal guardian must have lived full-time in Brisbane for a minimum of one year between 2024 and 2025.
  • Scholars are eligible to apply and receive up to four scholar awards over time.

Application Package Instructions

Application Requirements:

[NOTE: requirements differ from previous years]

We recommend that applicants review the application prior to starting to have everything prepared in advance before starting on the online form. Other than a few short answers, we will be asking you to upload files from your computer that you have prepared in advance. Have everything ready to upload before you start your online application. A partial application cannot be saved or submitted.

The attachments must be titled in the following format:

"Firstname-Lastname-DocumentTitle"

(For example: "Jane-Doe-Essays" or "Jane-Doe-Picture")

[NOTE: Scholars are required to upload all of the documents requested, as well as provide their contact information. Any applicant who does not provide the following materials by the deadline will be disqualified.]

Two personal essays - 300- 500 word responses to two writing prompts.

  • Describe a time in your life that has shaped who you are as a person.
  • Describe a time when you surprised yourself, and what you took away from that experience.
  • Describe a time when you did not reach your goal, or were disappointed with a  scenario or outcome, and how you recovered.

One letter of recommendation that is no older than three months old.

The letter must be addressed to the Brisbane Lions Club from a professional/academic contact, such as a high school or college instructor, or work supervisor. [Note: This is a change from last year when two letters were required, one from a professional/academic source, and one that could be from a friend. We have decided to eliminate the second reference letter that could be from a friend.]

The scholar interview is the final step to complete the award eligibility process. Scholars will be provided enough interview time slots to accommodate all scholar applicants on a first come basis. Each scholar interview is 20 minutes long and conducted via Zoom with two members of the Scholar Awards Committee.

In addition:

  • Changes to the selected appointment or requests for make-up interviews are discouraged; last-minute requests for changes will not necessarily be honored.
  • Applicants for a scholar award are expected to be prepared and prompt. Preparation includes being prepared to talk about your academic and career aspirations, as well as your essay topics.
  • Although it is not our goal to use the interview process to eliminate scholars, we do reserve the right to eliminate a scholar from consideration for an award if she/she fails to appear for the interview, is unprepared for the interview or behaves unprofessionally during the interview. The decision not to award a student a scholarship based on poor interview performance will be made by the Scholar Awards Committee.
